Education and Work Experience
He received his BSc degree from the Department of Earth Sciences, Nanjing University in Feb. 1982, his MSc degree from the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in December 1984, and worked in this institute afterwards. He went to Japan in May 1986, first as a visiting scholar in the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), then as a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Tokyo University, later as a special researcher for basic sciences in RIKEN, Japan Science and Technology Agency, and finally as Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, University of Electro-Communications. He came back to China in October 1996.
He is now Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He was Director of the Institute of Geochemistry, CAS and served at the same time as Director of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry of this Institute from July 1997 to September 2009, and was President of Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry from 2004 to 2013. He is Vice Chairman of Guizhou Association for Science and Technology, and a member of the Chinese Geological Society and the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences. He is also editorial board member of international and domestic journals such as Chemical Geology, Chinese Journal of Geochemistry etc.
Research Interest and Experience
Present Research Interest
Since 1996, he has been engaged in the interdisciplinary geochemical research of the Earth’s surface, mainly focusing on the bio-geochemical cycling of both nutrients and toxic elements in river basins while adopting the concept of systems sciences,i.e. all subsystems such as atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere are closely interrelated. The aim is to address the linkages of ecological and environmental changes with the geo-biological cycling of nutrients in river basins in China.
From the year 2000, he mainly works on: (1) the study of the chemical and isotopic (H, O, S, N) compositions of atmospheric wet and dry deposits, and estimation of their fluxes into the river basins especially in karst landform areas in southwest China, so as to learn how these atmospheric inputs would affect the natural bio-geochemical cycling of the related nutrients in the river basins; (2) the study of geochemical processes responsible for the variations in chemical and isotopic (H, O, S, N, C, Li, etc) composition of river and underground waters to get better understanding of how these variations are linked to the variation of soil degradation and ecological systems in the river basins; (3) the study of soil formation mechanism and weathering of the parent rocks and (4) the study of bio-geochemical processes responsible for the nutrients biogeochemical cycling in dams constructed along major rivers in southwest China.
Past Research Experiences
I. Ore deposit geochemistry research(1982.3-1986.4)
During his MSc study in the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, he carried out systematic research in the geochemical processes responsible for the formation of the Yingdonggou Ag-Pb-Zu sulfide ore deposit, which is located in northwest of Hubei Province. His research work involved geochemical study of mineral inclusions, isotopic composition study for tracing geochemical processes and the source of ore-forming elements, and mineralogical composition measurements.
II. Geochemical research of Cenozoic basalts and their captured xenoliths(1986.5-1991.3)
During his PhD study in University of Tokyo, he measured a lot of basalt and xenolith samples for abundances and compositions of major and trace element as well as their Sr, Nd, Ce isotopes, so as to understand the geochemical composition of the continental mantle beneath China and the geochemical processes for the geochemical heterogeneities of the mantle.
III. Geochemical research of loess and desert deposits in northwest China(1991.4-1994.3)
This research focuses on the mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic (Sr, Nd, Ce, Pb) compositions of the loess and sand samples collected from Tarim Basin and the central loess plateau. It helps to understand the provenance areas where the loess deposits came from and the geochemical and sedimentary processes to change the mineralogical and chemical compositions of the deposits, which is crucial to understand the loess formation and even the evolution of continental crust.
